Leaf Pick-Up
Public Works will be gearing up for leaf pickup. This program is for leaves
that naturally fall into the roadway. Mayor Scheck and the Village Board
have allowed the purchase of yard waste bags that have been delivered to
every home in the Village. This is to provide extra yard waste container
space. If you need additional bags, extra are stored at the Public Works
Department. Stock piling of leaves is not allowed in the street for the
following reasons:
- The piles of leaves take away from parking.
- Leaves are not illuminated, so when kids play in them, their safety is at
risk.
- Leaves can clog the sewer system, causing flooding.
- If dry, leaves can burn easily.
Hydrant Flushing
In the fall, around peak demands in water usage, the Public Works Department
flushes every fire hydrant within the Village at full pressure. Every resident
in the Village will be notified by letter before this program starts. We
ask that you allow your cold water to run in the morning for a couple of
minutes. The water is very safe to drink, but at times may discolor due
to heavy flushing. We flush hydrants for the following reasons:
- To insure that every fire hydrant works properly for fire protection.
- To establish better water quality.
- To exercise and lubricate all moving parts.

Snow Removing Service
The Village
has contracted Sequin Services to administer snow removal services to our
residents for all snowfalls of 2" or more at a reasonable cost. This
program is for seniors 65 and older, disabled residents and residents with
a medical condition, which would prevent them from removing snow.
If you
would like more information about this program or to sign-up, please stop
by or call our Administration office during regular business hours at 708-447-4211.
Snow Removal
The North Riverside Public Works Department is preparing for the winter
weather ahead. An integral part of dealing with snow is street salting.
The trained professionals in Public Works attack main roadways first to
keep traffic moving quickly and safely.
NR Public Works are responsible for these main roadways:
- Desplaines Avenue
- 26th Street
- 31st Street
Cook County and I.D.O.T. are responsible for the following
roadways:
- Harlem Avenue
- 1st Avenue
- 17th Avenue
Once the main roadways have been cleared the trucks split
up and start on the East/West streets followed by the North/South streets.
Then, the alleys and perimeter walkways are plowed.
In a snowfall of greater than 2 inches, please move
vehicles off the street to allow curb-to-curb cleaning. The crews are
dispatched as soon as the weather occurs, and stay for the entire duration.
When shoveling snow from your driveways or alley aprons, do not push snow
back into the street or alley.
When the storm ends, the crews continue to monitor all Village streets for
icy spots and areas where winds have re-deposited snow into traffic lanes.
Catch basins will also be cleared so melting snow has a place to drain.
