Bicycle Patrol

The Bicycle Patrol Unit was implemented in 2002 and made its debut at the Village's annual 4th of July parade. The equipment for the unit was purchased with grant funds from the State of Illinois. Some of the benefits of bicycle patrol are:

  • Officers are more accessible to the public.
  • Officers can approach silently and get much closer to crimes in progress without being seen.
  • Bike Officers can cover more ground than officers on foot.
  • Bicycles allow officers to patrol areas that are usually not accessible by a squad car.

Our Bicycle Patrol Unit currently consists of six officers and one supervisor. These officers have all successfully completed a 32-hour certification course on the operation of their specially equipped bicycles. The unit primarily operates from May through October and officers are assigned to bicycle patrol when the manpower allows.
