Hydrant Flushing

During the fall months when the demand for water decreases, the Public Works Department flushes every fire hydrant within the Village at full pressure. You will be advised by "Hydrant Flushing" signs throughout the area that is being flushed. During this time you may experience some discoloration to the water. This is normal and residents are asked to flush their tap for a short period of time. Fire hydrants are flushed for the following reasons:

  • To ensure every fire hydrant is in proper working condition
  • To establish better water quality by flushing out corrosion that may have occurred inside the water main
  • To exercise and lubricate all moving parts of a fire hydrant
