Quick Tips on How to Avoid Receiving a Violation

  • Stop at the marked stop line. If there is no marked stop line, stop before entering the crosswalk. If there is no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection.
  • Once you have stopped for a red light, do not proceed through the intersection until the light is green and the intersection is clear.
  • If you are making a right turn on red, you must come to a complete stop and yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before completing your turn.

What a Complete Stop Is

A complete stop means there is no forward momentum to your vehicle, and the needle on the speedometer is at 0 miles per hour. A rolling stop means your vehicle's wheels are still in motion, and your vehicle is moving less than 5 mph. Failing to come to a complete stop when required to by signs or signals is a violation of Illinois traffic law.
